Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the signing of the armistice between the Allied nations and Germany in 1918 that marked the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday in 1938. In 1954, President Eisenhower signed legislation to change the name to Veterans Day to honor those who served in all American wars.

NEWS: Rep. Claman Chosen as the New Chair of the Alaska Criminal Justice Commission

Anchorage – Today, Representative Matt Claman (D-Anchorage) was chosen as the new Chairman of the Alaska Criminal Justice Commission. Rep. Claman takes over for Greg Razo who serves as the Vice President for Government Relations with the regional native corporation CIRI. Razo will continue to serve on the commission in a seat reserved for a representative from the Alaska Native community. Rep. Claman has served as a non-voting member of the 13-member commission since 2017.

Thank you to all who attended the Alaska State Forum on Public Safety on Tuesday. The Forum drew over 80 people in the audience and many more online, with our live-stream receiving over 700 views so far. Each day and every day, people who care about our communities work to make wise use of our public safety resources and to improve public safety. The solutions are complicated and the path is long. It calls on all of us to work together as a community. Our speakers and panelists at the forum included police officers, prosecutors, public defenders, mental health providers, substance abuse counselors, university professors, and legislators.

In the late 1800s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution, American workers faced long hours, small wages, and dismal working conditions. During this time, labor unions became more vocal and began organizing strikes and rallies to protest the poor conditions and urge employers to renegotiate hours and pay.
