NEWS: Rep. Claman Chosen as the New Chair of the Alaska Criminal Justice Commission

Anchorage – Today, Representative Matt Claman (D-Anchorage) was chosen as the new Chairman of the Alaska Criminal Justice Commission. Rep. Claman takes over for Greg Razo who serves as the Vice President for Government Relations with the regional native corporation CIRI. Razo will continue to serve on the commission in a seat reserved for a representative from the Alaska Native community. Rep. Claman has served as a non-voting member of the 13-member commission since 2017.

Anchorage – Representative Matt Claman (D-Anchorage) and the UAA Justice Center will host an Alaska State Forum on Public Safety next month to update stakeholders on the status of justice reinvestment in Alaska and to examine Alaska’s crime trends and responses for those in the criminal justice system with substance abuse issues and behavioral health needs.

Alaska Lawmakers Oppose Any Federal Policy Separating Children from Parents at the Southern Border

Anchorage – Today, 21 members of the Alaska State Legislature sent a letter to President Donald Trump thanking him for responding to the wishes of the American people by pledging to end the practice of separating children from families that illegally cross the southern border of the United States. The President has confirmed that he will use his executive order authority to stop the practice, which his administration implemented earlier this year. The lead author of the letter is long-time State Representative David Guttenberg (D-Fairbanks) who notes that the policy was an inappropriate and ineffective use of government resources and taxpayer dollars.
