Representative Bart LeBon

House District 1 (Downtown Fairbanks)

I have called Fairbanks home since 1972 when I started at the University of Alaska Fairbanks on a basketball scholarship. I went on to graduate from the UAF School of Management in 1975 and raised a family with my wife, Mary, in Fairbanks with two children and five grandchildren.

Fairbanks and Interior Alaska has a very bright future due, in large part, to the introduction of clean-burning natural gas through the Interior Gas Utility, the anticipated near-term increase of oil through our Pipeline and the mission expansion now taking place at Eielson Air Force Base. Mining remains a critical part of our economic future thanks to the significant business investments made by the Usibelli Coal Mine, Ft. Knox and Pogo Gold Mines. Together with tourism and the economic engine that the University of Alaska represents for Interior Alaska, we have every reason to be very optimistic about our future as a community and state.

A strong, diversified economy best operates within a free market system that is not burdened by excessive government regulation–we need to encourage responsible resource development that is not unreasonably hampered by government overreach. Whenever possible, we need to encourage the continued search for new oil on the North Slope and future mining opportunities such as the International Tower Hill Mine project near Livengood, Alaska.

A strong K-12 and University education system are both critical to our long-term success as a state and both should always enjoy adequate budget support on a consistent basis. I believe that support for our law enforcement professionals should be a core responsibility of all elected officials. Public safety and the consistent enforcement of state laws should also be a very high priority.

I look forward to serving the Interior region and that State of Alaska in the 31st Legislature.
