Update from the Capitol!

Today is the 25th day of the legislative session, and things have already been moving at a fast pace. Discussions of this year’s operating budget have dominated our committee and subcommittee meetings here in the Capitol, and there is broad agreement that the instability of last year is not something we want to see repeated. Luckily, hard work was done over the fall and winter months to build awareness and find possible solutions to the structural obstacles facing our state.

Thanksgiving Update

It is truly a privilege to represent you in District 24. As the snow finally looks like it’s here to stay, I wanted to provide an update on projects happening in my office during the interim months and take the time to express my deep gratitude for the blessings we enjoy. While we are not currently in session, we have been steadily working to ensure progress towards improving education opportunities, strengthening public safety, promoting a healthy business environment, and protecting your property rights.

Special Session Update

I wanted to take this opportunity to share an update on the work accomplished recently in the Legislature. Over the past couple of months, our entire state has been evaluating the impacts of the Governor’s vetoes and considering what we want our future to look like. I could not be more grateful to the thousands of Alaskans who took the time to reach out and share their concerns and ideas. Your input illustrated the kind of investment that our community has in ensuring that neighbors are cared for and our next generation is provided with opportunities.

Improving Public Safety

It is a busy time in the State Capitol. The House passed its version of the Operating Budget for FY2020 last week, which makes more than $200 million in achievable reductions to the size of state government and protects our vulnerable populations, education system, roads and workforce. Reducing the footprint of government is a multi-year effort to carry out.
