Hello friends and neighbors in Juneau and across Alaska! It looks like we’re in for a great weekend for skiing, hiking, sledding, all things outside! Make sure you get out and take advantage of the snow and sun.
An interview with Alyse Galvin and Deena Mitchell from Great Alaska Schools.
Watch the interview here.
I have co-sponsored House Bill 52, which would provide universal Pre-K education. For too long, we have settled for an education system that doesn’t educate children when they are in the prime part of their lives to learn new things. Multiple studies show that children who are enrolled in high-quality Pre-K programs save taxpayers at least $7 for every $1 invested. I will continue to fight for education funding. Here in Juneau, the Association for the Education of Young Children is working towards providing universal pre-k education. If successful, our town would see better prepared children, more productive families, and a healthier community in the long term. Let’s keep Juneau a great place to raise a family!
Opportunity for Testimony – the operating budget and oil tax reform
Here is your opportunity to be heard on the operating budget, HB57, and the mental health program, HB59. The House Finance Committee will be taking testimony from Juneau area residents Saturday, March 4, from 1–3 pm. If there is overflow, testimony will continue from 3–5 pm. The most convenient way to make your voice heard is by calling the Legislative Information Office from the comfort of your home, 907-465-4648. I’d also love to see you in in capitol room 519 House Finance.
Another very important piece of legislation you can comment on is HB111, a bill that would reduce the tax discount Alaska currently gives oil producers by 1%. This bill intends to get Alaskans closer to our fair share of oil revenue and to provide more transparency. In a time where every dollar counts, HB111 would send tens of millions to our schools, public facilities, and other state programs. Testimony will be held in the Barnes room #124 in the Capitol Building at 6:30 pm, Monday, March 6th. As with the budget bills, you can give your testimony on HB 111 by calling the LIO at 907-465-4648.
Please take the time to testify on these major pieces of legislation.
We want to hear from you!
Reading Across America
If you have a young one who loves stories, come to the Mendenhall Valley Public Library this Saturday, March 4th, for JEA’s Read Across America event! Reading is essential to develop the young mind, and this is a great opportunity to promote the love of reading in young children. There will also be crafts, face painting, entertainment, and even cake! I’ll be reading, I hope to see you there!
Have a great week, and please do not hesitate to contact my office at 465-3744 if you have any questions or you would like to meet with me. I would love to hear your ideas on how I can make Juneau a better place to live for all of us.
