Dear Friends and Neighbors, You may already be aware that earlier this week the Anchorage Daily News published a Compass article I wrote about the School Voucher discussion that is currently taking place in the capital. The Item in question is House Joint Resolution 1 (HJR1). HJR1 is an attempt to amend the language of the Alaskan Constitution, which currently states: “No money shall be paid from public funds for the direct benefit of any religious or other private educational institution.”

Rep. Drummond’s Newsletter: Notes from Juneau

Session is in full swing now, which means the oil tax debate is ramping up. It’s safe to say everyone in the capitol agrees oil taxes need to be changed, but how we’re going to get there has been the biggest debate in the legislature for several years now. I’ve had a chance to read through both the Governor’s oil tax bill and the alternative bill that Democrats introduced this week. What I like about the Democrat’s bill, HB111, is that it provides incentives for getting more oil in the pipeline. Unlike the Governor’s bill, there aren’t tax reductions for oil companies unless they start producing more. It also encourages new exploration and will make the industry more competitive.

Dear Friends and Neighbors, It's been a busy week in Alaska's Capital City! Superintendents, teachers, parents and students from all around the state traveled to Juneau to talk about the importance of education funding and let legislators know what is working in their region of the state. It was enlightening to listen to the issues that are unique to the public school systems outside of Anchorage, and I look forward working with Alaskans to better our children's education.
