Dear friends and neighbors,
This week, the House Finance Committee will be hearing public testimony on the budget – please take time to go to your Legislative Information Office (LIO) or call to weigh in. What services and programs are important to you? See below for information on when and how to testify. It is also time to file Permanent Fund Dividend application, and additional information on that can be found below. There is also an update on some of the bills I’m sponsoring.
Of course, the biggest issue on our plate is addressing the looming fiscal crisis. We are actively working on moving a sustainable and responsible fiscal plan forward that provides adequate sources of revenue to support necessary and critical state services such as education, public safety, and health.
This Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, the House Finance Committee will take public testimony on the operating budget and the mental health budget. Included below is the testimony schedule for communities in House District 33. You will also find instructions on how to testify.

Public Testimony Instructions
Testify in person or on the phone: Limited to 2 minutes each. Arrive (or call in) early to expedite the sign in process, and be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the end of the allotted time period or testimony may close early. If you are a member of a group with the same message, in the interest of time, please select a spokesperson to testify for the entire group. If you are calling from a community without a legislative information office, i.e., an “Off Net” caller, only call during the designated Off Net time period on March 3rd and 4th; please call 465-4648 by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday through Saturday to obtain the call-in phone number. All Off Net callers are required to hang up immediately after your testimony is taken to keep as many lines open as possible for other callers. Testifiers can continue to listen or watch the meeting online at www.akleg.gov, click on Alaska State Legislature and then choose the “Live Now” button. The hearing may also be televised on Gavel to Gavel, please check listings.
Email Testimony: If you live in a community with a legislative information office, but are unable to access it during the specified time period, you may send your written testimony to the House Finance Committee via firstname.lastname@example.org through 5:00 p.m. Saturday, March 4, 2017.
I had the good fortune to travel to Gustavus and participate in a community meeting where we covered a broad range of topics. Thank you to Alaska Standing Up, a local community citizens group, for setting up the meeting and inviting me to participate. I was also able to partake in a chili cook-off fundraiser for the Gustavus Community Center. There were over 20 submittals, and they were all amazing. Thank you to the chefs and others who did such great work in putting the fundraiser together. I am looking forward to making it back to Gustavus soon.
