Public Testimony on the Budget

Dear friends and neighbors,

This week, the House Finance Committee will be hearing public testimony on the budget – please take time to go to your Legislative Information Office (LIO) or call to weigh in. What services and programs are important to you?  See below for information on when and how to testify.  It is also time to file Permanent Fund Dividend application, and additional information on that can be found below.  There is also an update on some of the bills I’m sponsoring

Of course, the biggest issue on our plate is addressing the looming fiscal crisis.  We are actively working on moving a sustainable and responsible fiscal plan forward that provides adequate sources of revenue to support necessary and critical state services such as education, public safety, and health.

Gustavus recap

I had the good fortune to travel to Gustavus and participate in a community meeting where we covered a broad range of topics.  Thank you to Alaska Standing Up, a local community citizens group, for setting up the meeting and inviting me to participate.  I was also able to partake in a chili cook-off fundraiser for the Gustavus Community Center.  There were over 20 submittals, and they were all amazing.  Thank you to the chefs and others who did such great work in putting the fundraiser together.  I am looking forward to making it back to Gustavus soon.

PFD application reminder

If you have not filed for your Permanent Fund Dividend yet, please remember to apply. The application deadline is March 31.  You can apply online at http://pfd.alaska.gov/, or call the Juneau Permanent Fund Dividend office at 465-2326 to get more information on how to receive a paper application.

Status of personal legislation

Below is information on a few of the bills we have been working on this session.  I will include information on other bills we are working on in a future newsletter.

  • House Bill 48 extends the Alaska Board of Architects, Engineers, and Land Surveyors for eight years, and changes the status of the landscape architect board member from non-voting to voting. HB48 is in House Rules Committee awaiting calendaring on the House Floor.
  • House Bill 49 extends the Alaska Board of Direct-Entry Midwives to 2021. HB49 will be heard in the House Finance Committee next.
  • House Bill 50 extends the use of Qualifications-Based Selection (QBS) of design professionals to municipal and non-profit organizations receiving state funds.  HB50 is currently in the House State Affairs Committee and has had one hearing.
  • House Bill 83 Provides a retirement choice for teachers, Troopers, firefighters, and other public employees.  Employees can opt for either a defined benefit retirement plan or a defined contribution retirement program.  The bill will save Alaska money, and will help in our efforts to recruit and retain well qualified state employees.  HB83 will be heard in the House Labor & Commerce next.

As always, please be in touch if you have any questions or comments.

Thank you,

Sam Kito III
