ACTION ALERT: Public Testimony for SB 54 – Criminal Justice Reform

Dear Neighbors,

Rep. Kawasaki Chairing Dept of Public Safety Hearing This Month to Prepare for Special SessionRep. Kawasaki Chairing Dept of Public Safety Hearing This Month to Prepare for Special Session

The Governor recalled members of the  Alaska State House to a 4th Special Session  to consider changes to SB 91 , the Criminal Justice Reform bill of 2016.

Senator Coghill’s  SB 54 , includes giving sentencing discretion back to judges and strengthen sentencing for violations of conditions of release, first-time Class C felonies, reoffenders of petty theft crimes and Class B Misdemeanors.

As I wrote last week, public safety is a basic right and essential service. Even when there is a small rise in crime, my neighbors have expressed fear and anxiety. I’m hopeful that these meaningful changes in the crime bill can be passed swiftly so we can discuss the roots of increased crime, including the economy, unemployment and the opioid epidemic. Legislators need to hear from you about your concerns now!

There are TWO opportunities for you to make your voice heard on SB 54, which is now before me in the House Finance Committee :

  • Saturday, October 28: 11am to 5pm
  • Monday, October 30: 5pm to 9pm
