Saturday - University and Oil Subsidy Public Testimony Opportunities

Dear Neighbors,

Hello from Juneau, where the legislative session marches on to Day 103. This is just a quick note about a couple of public testimony opportunities tomorrow, Saturday, April 29.

Oil & Gas Subsidy Reform Testimony in Senate Finance Committee

One of the four pillars of the Alaska House Majority Coalition’s fiscal plan is to eliminate the cash credits to oil companies that has increased state liability to nearly $900 million. While I am pleased the Senate agrees with this portion of the bill, I still have concerns about maintaining the over-generous tax structure imposed by SB 21. You can read more about the bill here under Documents tab.

You can testify to the Senate Finance Committee from 9am to 11am tomorrow (Saturday, April 29). Testifiers must be signed up by 10:30am. You can go to your local Legislative Information Office or by calling 844-586-9085. You can also email your testimony to

University of Alaska Budget

Chair of the House Finance Subcommittee for the University of Alaska, Rep. David Guttenberg, is hosting public testimony on the University budget tomorrow from 1:30 to 4:30pm. This is a great opportunity to voice your support for the University or add any comments or concerns to the public record. You can go to your local LIO or by calling 844-586-9085 to testify.

For background, the Senate Republicans proposed a cut of $22 million to the University of Alaska budget, on top of the $53 million in cuts in the last 3 years. The University estimates this could result in a loss of more than 900 employees and suspension or elimination of 50 programs across the state. These cuts will drive Alaskans out of state for quality higher education and directly impact the Fairbanks economy and local businesses who hire local graduates.

I hope you take advantage of these opportunities to voice your concerns. Please feel free to send me your comments, questions or concerns any time about these or any other important issues before the legislature. We are here to represent you – make your voice heard!

Happy 100th Birthday, UAF!

The University of Alaska Fairbanks is celebrating its Centennial this week! I sponsored a citation to commemorate the event alongside Rep. Adam Wool. You can read more about the centennial celebration here, which kicks off on Wednesday, May 3, at Centennial Square on the UAF campus near Wickersham Hall from 1:00 to 2:30pm.

Be sure to congratulate UAF graduates, too! UAF Commencement is on Saturday, May 6 at 1:20pm at the Carlson Center.

As always, I am available for you anytime and will try to update you more frequently during the last 10 days of session. Remember to follow me on TwitterFacebook and Instagram throughout session and beyond.
