POST ELECTION NEWS
A New Bi-Partisan Coalition

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I am happy to report that with the election now over, we have a significant shift in the balance within the House of Representatives. 16 members of the Independent Democratic Caucus and 5 members of the Musk-Ox group (moderate Republicans and 2 rural Democrats) have joined to form a Bi-partisan Coalition in the House. I could not be more enthusiastic about the promise of what we can now get done in the House as the majority working together for the good of our state.

Along with this new majority, I am extremely honored to have been assigned as Co-Chair of the Resources Committee.

In a few weeks time I will be sending out a print newsletter with more information about the bi-partisan work we hope to achieve next session, my priorities for the 30thlegislative session, and an overview of the new organization of the House.

Health Insurance open enrollment

Just a reminder that the fourth open enrollment period has started, allowing millions of Americans who currently lack the security of health insurance to have another opportunity to gain access to affordable coverage.  Those who enrolled through the Health Insurance Marketplaces in previous years are able to renew or change their plans. In the Marketplace, in 2017, thanks to tax credits that protect people from rising premiums, more than 7 in 10 consumers will be able to find a plan for less than $75 a month. And what’s more, if every returning consumer shopped around and selected the lowest cost plan offering similar benefits, average premiums would fall by $28 per month – 20 percent – compared to 2016.

I encourage you to check out your options for yourself at HealthCare.gov

Take your legislator to work day

On October 11, 2016 I was privileged to participate in the Association of People Supporting Employmentfirst “Take your legislator to work day”. APSE advances employment and self-sufficiency for all people with disabilities through advocacy and education.

I shadowed Ms. Lucy Odden, who works in the front office of the United States Fish and Wildlife Serive in Anchorage. Ms. Odden has earned more than a dozen certificates of recognition for her work with the Department.
