Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Speaking on the floor last Friday
The last two weeks have been a lot of work, but it’s work that I’m proud to do for you and the people of Alaska.
Standing up for Alaskans
Oil and gas taxes will dominate my time on the House Resources Committee in the coming few weeks. House Bill 111 strengthens the oil and gas production tax regime to provide more stability for oil and gas development in the state while making sure that Alaskans get a fair share from the production of our resources. It also helps reduce an unaffordable oil and gas tax credit outlay.
Saturday, one of my bills gets a hearing before the State Affairs Committee. HB 13 prevents state or municipal resources from being used in any federal efforts to create a registry based on a person’s race, religion, ethnicity, or national origin.
Then next Friday, another bill I sponsored, HB 38, will have a hearing before the House Labor and Commerce Committee. This bill addresses an issue regarding what happens under Workers’ Compensation when a person without familial dependents dies on the job. Right now, no benefits are paid unless the person had a spouse or dependents. The bill will make it possible for a lump sum payment to go to the estate of the decedent.
Today, HB 115 gets a hearing before the House Finance Committee. This is the bill to balance the budget currently being heard in the House. I would encourage everyone to take a look at it. If you have some testimony to offer, you can visit the Midtown Anchorage Legislative Information Office at 1500 Benson Blvd between 1:30pm-3:30pm, Friday, February 17, 2017 and tell them that you would like to testify on HB 115 before the House Finance Committee. I recommend that you come about 15 minutes early.

Being in Juneau I don’t always get to meet with my constituents during session. However, there are two opportunities coming up in the weeks ahead for us to meet face-to-face when I will be in Anchorage.
- The Anchorage Caucus will be meeting at the LIO (1500 Benson Blvd) on February 25 from 10am-noon.
- Senator Gardner, Rep. Drummond, and myself will be meeting again back at the LIO, this time armed with donuts, on March 4 from 10am-11:30am.
I look forward to receiving your thoughts on any of these issues, as it is you, my constituents, that guide every step I take toward a better Alaska.
Thank you and have a great week!
