Friends and Neighbors,
UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA PUBLIC TESTIMONY
Many of you have contacted me regarding the University and the impact the proposed cuts may have. I want you to know that I am listening. I support the University and recognize its importance to the state.
As Chair of the University of Alaska Subcommittee, I oversaw the University’s budget in the House. We supported the Governor’s proposed funding plan of $325 million.
The Senate recently voted on their version of the FY18 Operating Budget, which includes a 7% cut, equivalent to $22 million, to the University’s funding.
The University recognizes it needs to be less dependent on the state funding. However, drastic cuts in a short amount of time hurt the University, its students, and the state. An educated workforce is imperative to the state’s success and we cannot achieve that without the University. The University needs the state, and the state needs the University- we cannot forget that.
I will be holding a public comment meeting to hear your concerns on the proposed impacts:
- Saturday, April 29th, 2017 from 1-4:30 pm
I want the University and its students, employees, and supporters to be adequately heard by the Legislature. We want to hear the public’s opinion on the proposed cuts and their impacts on the University. I urge you to write, call, or testify in-person and share your thoughts. We will be listening.
