Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Packed house at the Save Our Schools Forum
Packed house at the Save Our Schools Forum

Because of recent attacks on Alaska’s public education system, with only a minimal amount of time made available for dialogue from the public, I chaired a Save Our Schools public forum for parents, teachers and concerned Alaskans to testify about Alaska’s school system. Everyone was invited to attend, and we received phone calls from all over the State: Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks, Wasilla, Palmer, Valdez, Kenai, Koyukuk, Homer. We heard from over 30 Alaskans before we ran out of time, and the response was overwhelmingly clear: The public stands firm against school vouchers, against extending the length of time to tenure, against a pointless school rating system, and the people demand proper funding for our public schools. You can watch the entire forum here:

This public outpouring backs up what I learned from the survey I had taken in my district. Answers to the question “Do you support amending the state constitution to allow for school vouchers” prompted some lengthy, thoughtful answers, with the final result being slightly over 80% in opposition of amending the constitution. If you still want to fill out the survey, and I truly hope that you do, visit:

The day after the public forum, a Save Our Schools Rally happened on the steps of the capitol building here in Juneau. You can read about it here:

Needless to say, another large crowd of Alaskans showed up and, in an outpouring of support for public schools, really rattled some windows in the Capitol.

It can get lonely working in the House Minority here in Juneau, but it warms my heart to know I have the support of the public.

Pay attention this upcoming Thursday, April 4th. Backbone is putting on a state wide Rally to Stop the Oil Wealth Giveaway and is asking Alaskans to show their support for getting a fair return for Alaska’s oil resources. If you want to stand up for Alaska, scroll to the bottom of the newsletter for further details about the rally.

Thank you,

Harriet Drummond[signed]
