NEWS: Governor Walker Signs Legislation Improving Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets in Alaska

Anchorage – Today, Alaska Governor Bill Walker signed legislation to update Alaska’s probate laws to improve fiduciary access to digital assets. House Bill 108 was introduced by Representative Matt Claman (D-Anchorage). The Senate companion bill, Senate Bill 16, was introduced by Senator Shelley Hughes (R-Wasilla). HB 108 passed both the Alaska House of Representatives and Alaska Senate with strong bipartisan support in April.

Yesterday, the legislature approved a capital budget compromise that ensures Alaska will continue to receive federal funding for road repairs, bridge upgrades, school facilities, and vital infrastructure projects that keep Alaskans working. Passage of the capital budget will allow the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities to move forward on construction projects this summer without delay, remove uncertainty for contractors looking to submit bids, and create better job security in the construction industry.

Rep. Claman’s July 17th Newsletter: Legislature Reaches Compromise on Oil & Gas Subsidy Reform

On Saturday, July 15, the legislature agreed to a compromise version of House Bill 111, the bill that eliminated oil and gas cash subsidies. On June 30, the Governor signed the FY18 operating budget. With an operating budget approved before the start of the new fiscal year, the legislature still has more work to do for a long-term solution.

NEWS: Special Session Compromise; End Cash Credits Now

Anchorage – The Alaska House Majority Coalition has communicated a proposed compromise to the Alaska Senate Majority to address oil tax credit reform, which is the subject of the ongoing Second Special Session of the 30th Alaska State Legislature. Coalition members support changes to House Bill 111 to end the practice of paying oil companies cash subsidies for certain tax credits. This is expected to save the State of Alaska an estimated $1.5 billion over the next ten years.

Rep. Claman’s June 26th Newsletter: Legislature Approves Operating Budget

On Thursday evening, the legislature passed House Bill 57, the FY18 operating budget. Passing this budget compromise means the state will continue to provide government services when the state’s fiscal year begins on July 1. Although passing the operating budget is a step in the right direction, the legislature has not adopted a responsible action plan to address Alaska’s financial challenges. There is more work to be done for a long-term solution.

NEWS: House Moves to Prevent Government Shutdown with Passage of Combined Operating and Capital Budgets

Juneau – Tonight, to avoid a government shutdown at the beginning of the month, the Alaska House of Representatives passed a combined Capital and Operating Budget for Fiscal Year 2018. The House budgets reverse the Senate’s $69 million cut to K-12 education and most of the cut to the University of Alaska. Additionally, the Capital Budget restored the full amount of expected Permanent Fund Dividends, which will be paid in the fall to eligible Alaskans.
