NEWS: Congratulations to Musher Mitch Seavey on a Record-Breaking Iditarod Victory

Juneau – The members of the Alaska House Majority Coalition congratulate Mitch Seavey and his dog team on their record-breaking Iditarod victory today. Seavey arrived in Nome at 3:40 this afternoon with an official time of 8 days, 3 hours, 40 minutes, and 13 seconds. He shattered the old speed record set last year by his son Dallas Seavey, who is a four time Iditarod champion.

Juneau – Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) will host events across the state this week for Alaska's third annual Food Security Week. This year’s theme is “All About Alaska Grown” and the week will celebrate local food producers and Alaska’s agricultural history. There will also be opportunities to discuss economic opportunities in Alaska’s agriculture industry, and future opportunities for increasing the state's local food initiatives.

NEWS: Alaska House Passes Survivors’ Benefits Bill

Juneau – Today, the Alaska House of Representatives unanimously passed House Bill 23, sponsored by Rep. Andy Josephson (D-Anchorage), to extend medical benefits for families of peace officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty. HB 23 would create a special fund under the direction of the Alaska Department of Public Safety to extend health insurance at the same level they were receiving when the peace officer or firefighter was killed.

NEWS: Legislation Filed to Respond to Climate Change in Alaska

Juneau – The Co-chairs of the House Resources Committee, Reps. Andy Josephson (D-Anchorage) and Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage), have filed legislation to respond to climate change in Alaska. House Bill 173 would create a new commission made up of elected city and borough officials from across Alaska and several state department commissioners. A primary duty of the Climate Change Response Commission would be to assist rural communities and non-government organizations to secure funding to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change. The Commission would also be tasked with seeking out grants and other forms of financing.

NEWS: Legislation Naming Two State Ferries Passes the Alaska Legislature

Juneau – Legislation to officially name two new state ferries after the Alaska glaciers Tazlina and Hubbard passed the Alaska State Legislature today. Senate Bill 33 was introduced on behalf of Alaska Governor Bill Walker. Earlier today, the bill unanimously passed the Alaska House of Representatives after unanimous support in the Alaska Senate on February 27th.

NEWS: North Slope Oil Discovery Shows Need for Oil Tax Credit Reform

Juneau – Today, oil companies Repsol and Armstrong Oil and Gas announced a significant onshore oil discovery on the North Slope of Alaska. The Horseshoe prospect is part of the Nanushuk play in the Pikka Unit. The leases for the prospect are held by Armstrong Oil and Gas, which has applied to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for an environmental review of its development plans for the Nanushuk play.
