Governor Walker Signs a Bill to Support Alaska’s EMS Providers

Anchorage – Today, Alaska Governor Bill Walker signed legislation into law to allow emergency medical services (EMS) providers to recover additional costs for transporting Medicaid patients in Alaska. House Bill 176, sponsored by Representative Adam Wool (D-Fairbanks), changes state law to ensure EMS providers can seek supplemental reimbursements from the Medicaid program, which currently serves over 200,000 Alaskans.

Anchorage – Today, Alaska Governor Bill Walker signed legislation sponsored by Representative Harriet Drummond (D-Anchorage) to improve the workforce training programs in Alaska. House Bill 221, which passed the Alaska Legislature with broad bipartisan support, tasks the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education with using a statistics program to gauge the effectiveness of Alaska’s workforce training efforts and to identify coverage gaps.

Governor Walker Signs Priority Public Safety Legislation

Juneau – Today, Alaska Governor Bill Walker signed legislation sponsored by Representative Matt Claman (D-Anchorage) to improve public safety, provide safer neighborhoods for Alaska’s families, and protect the state’s medical professionals. “House Bill 312 passed by near-unanimous votes: 19-0 in the Senate and 31-1 in the House. The vote shows the Legislature's recognition that justice reform is working. We rejected arguments to repeal and replace past legislation and favored balanced monitoring and review focused on improving public safety,” said Rep. Claman.

Governor Walker to Sign Landmark Bill Reforming Alaska’s Overburdened Foster Care System

Anchorage – Today, Alaska Governor Bill Walker will sign landmark legislation into law to implement proven reforms to Alaska’s overburdened foster care system. The two-year process to successfully pass House Bill 151 concluded in the final days of the Second Session of the 30th Alaska State Legislature. Gov. Walker is scheduled to sign the bill today at 1:00 p.m. during a ceremony at the UAA Child Welfare Academy located at 1901 Bragaw Street in Suite 105. The Governor will be joined bill sponsor Representative Les Gara (D-Anchorage), who grew up in foster care, and dozens of current and former foster youth, including several youth preparing to attend the University of Alaska in the fall.

Transboundary Mining Prompts Concerns from Alaska Lawmakers

Anchorage – Several Alaska lawmakers have sent a letter to Alaska Governor Bill Walker stressing the need for action to protect the watersheds of Southeast Alaska from the negative downstream impacts of large-scale hard rock mining in British Columbia. The ten lawmakers are urging the Governor to develop partnerships with other states that border British Columbia to demand binding international agreements mandating a transparent environmental review process for mining projects. In the letter, the Alaska lawmakers insist the environmental review process satisfy the concerns of U.S., Canadian, and Tribal governments.

Alaska Legislature Votes to Simplify How Organized Militia Members are Paid

Anchorage – On May 12th, the final day of the recent legislative session, the Alaska Legislature unanimously passed a bill authorizing the same pay and benefits for members of Alaska’s organized militia regardless of whether they are called to state or federal active duty. The House Military and Veterans Affairs Committee sponsored House Bill 150 to simplify and clarify the payment system for Alaska militia members.
