NEWS: Rep. Wool Opposes Dangerous Budget Cuts to the University of Alaska

Juneau – The Alaska Senate is scheduled to take up the proposed operating budget for Fiscal Year 2018 on Thursday. The budget that passed the Alaska House of Representatives last month maintained the amount of funding for the University of Alaska at $325 million, but the Alaska Senate Majority is considering a $22 million cut that will be taken up on the Senate Floor Thursday.

NEWS: Lawmakers Believe Southeast Alaska Needs Proportional Representation on University of Alaska Board of Regents

Juneau – The Southeast Alaska delegation of the Alaska House of Representatives — Reps. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins (D-Sitka), Sam Kito III (D-Juneau), Dan Ortiz (I-Ketchikan), Justin Parish (D-Juneau), as well as Senator Dennis Egan (D-Juneau) — have sent a letter to Alaska Governor Bill Walker asking for the restoration of the region’s representation on the University of Alaska Board of Regents in the next appointment cycle. A recent appointment to the Board of Regents has left Southeast Alaska with only one representative on the 11-member Board of Regents.

I am chairing the finance subcommittee for the University budget and this week we are soliciting public comments on the Governor’s proposed FY18 budget for the University of Alaska System. The dates for this public comment period begin today, Tuesday, February 14 through Tuesday the 21st. If you have input, I welcome it and encourage you to share your thoughts on the direction and priorities of the University of Alaska.
