Juneau – Alaska House of Representatives Resources Committee co-Chair Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) released the following statement in response to today’s announcement regarding possible increased oil and gas exploration on Alaska’s North Slope. U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke signed an order calling for an updated resource assessment for the 1002 area of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) and a revised Integrated Activity Plan for the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A)

NEWS: Rep. Guttenberg Remains Focused on the Need for Broadband Infrastructure and Access in the Arctic

Juneau – The University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University of the Arctic are holding a forum early next week focused on broadband infrastructure and access in the Arctic. The Arctic Broadband Forum is being held in conjunction with the Week of the Arctic to celebrate the accomplishments of the Arctic Council under the chairmanship of the United States. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will turn over the chairmanship of the council to Finland during the bi-annual Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting May 10th and 11th in Fairbanks.

NEWS: Rep. Westlake Introduces Legislation to Protect Arctic Caribou Herds

Juneau – Earlier today, Representative Dean Westlake (D-Kiana) introduced House Bill 211 to further protect one of Alaska’s most vital resources. HB 211 requires nonresident hunters, without a second degree of kin, to be accompanied by a licensed professional hunting guide in order to take a caribou from any of the Western Arctic, Porcupine, or Central Arctic Caribou Herds.

NEWS: Democrats Host Legislative Town Hall Meeting to Focus on Getting the Job Done

FAIRBANKS – Representatives David Guttenberg (D-Fairbanks), Scott Kawasaki (D-Fairbanks), and Adam Wool (D-Fairbanks) are holding a town hall meeting to discuss the current state of affairs during the first Special Session of the 29th Alaska Legislature. Topics will include the budget, education funding, senior benefits, and Medicaid reform an expansion. Juneau – The Alaska Legislature has passed legislation sponsored by Representative Adam Wool (D-Fairbanks) and Representative Scott Kawasaki (D-Fairbanks) to expand the popular Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge in Fairbanks. House Bill 70 passed the Senate by a vote of 20-0 and passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 37-1.

NEWS: Alaska Senate Passes Legislation to Expand the Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge

Juneau – Today, the Alaska Senate unanimously passed legislation sponsored by Representative Adam Wool (D-Fairbanks) to expand the popular Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge in Fairbanks. House Bill 70 passed the Senate by a vote of 20-0. The bill previously passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 37-1. HB 70 will now go back to the House for concurrence due to minor changes made during the committee process in the Senate.
