Greetings from Juneau this 70th day of session. Work towards a fiscal solution continues in earnest throughout the capitol. The finance committee spent hours last week considering HB 111, which looks to reform our oil and gas tax credit system to limit state liability and increase revenues when prices are higher. A key part of a stable fiscal plan is ensuring that the state balance sheet is protected against an accumulation of costly credits during low prices or because of bad investments by the oil companies. Thank you to all the Alaskans who came out Saturday to testify on HB 111.

It’s now Day 66 of the 90 day session. Despite delays on the budget process I discussed last week, the legislature continues to move forward in an effort to protect our economy and avoid any more special sessions. The House Majority believes we should respect timeline and get done on time with a balanced budget and significant deficit reduction plans.

Rep. Seaton’s March 20th Newsletter

Greetings from Juneau this 63rd day of session. Last week the House spent the majority of our time on the floor debating the budget. 134 amendments were submitted; in the last 15 years we have seen no more than 32 floor amendments to the budget. A few of the amendments were adopted. Many of those that failed were proposed cuts to budget allocations without acknowledging the effect the cuts would have, such as reducing substance abuse services.

Rep. Seaton’s March 13th Newsletter

Greetings from Juneau this 56th day of session. It was a long week for the House Finance Committee, and we are preparing for another long week of floor sessions. In Finance we spent 20 hours considering 330 amendments to the operating budget. Many of the amendments would have taken certain parts of the budget back to FY16 levels without accurately taking into account other changes or reductions the departments already made to other parts of their budget.
