The budget and the legalization of recreational marijuana continue to be big themes this legislative session. The Legislature is waiting for Governor Walker’s detailed budget so we can start discussions and make decisions about program funding. Tuesday, January 20th marked the first day of the 29th Alaska Legislature and it is looking to be a very interesting first session. Our caucus has grown by 30%; we have a new governor with ambitions to expand Medicaid, providing insurance to 40,000 Alaskans. And, oil prices have dropped to $49.50 greatly reducing Alaska’s revenue stream and helping to create a $3.5 billion deficit. But before I start talking about the rough days that we will have to weather, I would like to start with some good news!

NEWS: House Democratic Caucus Celebrates New Administration of Bill Walker and Byron Mallott

Anchorage – Earlier today Bill Walker was sworn in as the Governor of Alaska during a ceremony in Juneau. During that same ceremony Byron Mallott was sworn in as Alaska’s Lieutenant Governor. The 13 members of the House Democratic Caucus send congratulations to the new Governor and Lt. Governor and pledge to work with the Administration to solve the pressing problems facing Alaska.
