NEWS: Special Session Compromise; End Cash Credits Now

Anchorage – The Alaska House Majority Coalition has communicated a proposed compromise to the Alaska Senate Majority to address oil tax credit reform, which is the subject of the ongoing Second Special Session of the 30th Alaska State Legislature. Coalition members support changes to House Bill 111 to end the practice of paying oil companies cash subsidies for certain tax credits. This is expected to save the State of Alaska an estimated $1.5 billion over the next ten years.

NEWS: House Moves to Prevent Government Shutdown with Passage of Combined Operating and Capital Budgets

Juneau – Tonight, to avoid a government shutdown at the beginning of the month, the Alaska House of Representatives passed a combined Capital and Operating Budget for Fiscal Year 2018. The House budgets reverse the Senate’s $69 million cut to K-12 education and most of the cut to the University of Alaska. Additionally, the Capital Budget restored the full amount of expected Permanent Fund Dividends, which will be paid in the fall to eligible Alaskans.

NEWS: House Passes Bill to Allow a New Type of Corporation in Alaska

Juneau – Today, the Alaska House of Representatives approved legislation to allow benefit corporations to operate in Alaska. Benefit corporations are for profit organizations that incorporate public benefits and community improvements into their business model. House Bill 124, sponsored by Representative Sam Kito (D-Juneau), would bring Alaska’s corporate law in line with thirty-one other states that have passed benefit corporation legislation.

NEWS: Alaska Legislature Passes Legislation to Insure Survivors of Public Servants Killed In the Line of Duty

Juneau – Today, legislation to extend healthcare coverage to the families of peace officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty officially passed the Alaska State Legislature. House Bill 23, sponsored by Representative Andy Josephson (D-Anchorage), passed the Alaska House of Representatives on a unanimous vote in March and a slightly different version of the bill passed the Alaska State Senate last week by a vote of 19-0. The Alaska House formally concurred with the Senate changes to the bill earlier today.

NEWS: Legislation Naming Two State Ferries Passes the Alaska Legislature

Juneau – Legislation to officially name two new state ferries after the Alaska glaciers Tazlina and Hubbard passed the Alaska State Legislature today. Senate Bill 33 was introduced on behalf of Alaska Governor Bill Walker. Earlier today, the bill unanimously passed the Alaska House of Representatives after unanimous support in the Alaska Senate on February 27th.

NEWS: Alaska House Majority Coalition Supports Disaster Declaration for Opioid Epidemic

Juneau – The members of the Alaska House Majority Coalition commend Governor Walker for his decision to sign a disaster declaration for the worsening opioid epidemic in Alaska. The disaster declaration allows a statewide program under the direction of Alaska’s Chief Medical Officer to facilitate the distribution of the life-saving drug naloxone, which is used to revive overdose victims. Earlier today, Governor Walker signed an Administrative Order that sets up an Incident Command System and directs all state departments to apply for federal grants to respond to the opioid epidemic.
