Rep. Kito’s April 17th Newsletter: Session Overtime Begins

As of Sunday, April 16th we have passed through the statutory end of session, and we are now officially into overtime. Our state budget has passed the House and the Senate, but we have not yet started the conference committee process. There is still work to do on our fiscal plan, and this week we took a major step towards sustainability. With the passage of House Bill 111 and House Bill 115, and passage of the House amendments to Senate Bill 26, we have all of the pieces out on the table to get us much closer to a comprehensive fiscal plan – you can read this for more information.

Rep. Kito’s Newsletter: State budget and ride-sharing

Spring is in the air, and of course there is eternal hope for a timely end to session here in our State Capitol. We are now down to less than a month to go for us to finish in our statutorily limited 90-day session. The budget is well on its way, with a big difference in where the House and the Senate would like to end up. The discussion about whether we provide adequate funding to support state services (House version of the budget) or whether we put undue pressure on state services by cutting education, health care, public safety (Senate version of the budget), will take place in conference committee where the two versions will be reconciled.

I hope this finds you well and enjoying some winter fun. With all the great community activities going on (from sports to film festivals) there’s a lot to pick from. Below is just a sample – if you have others to share, let me know! As a heads-up, I’ll be in Gustavus this weekend, and I hope to see you there. As always, please keep in touch with any questions, comments, or notices.

Rep. Kito’s Newsletter: School is Back in Session

Fall is in the air, and school has started for students in northern Southeast Alaska. A very big welcome to the teachers, staff, students, and families that have transitioned back to school! While summer has passed, it is exciting to think about students and teachers getting to know their new classes and gearing up for the year ahead. It is time to enjoy those early morning swim practices, after school activities, and evenings of homework. With school in full swing again, please be aware of changes on the roads: watch for school buses, keep an eye out for speed limits in school zones, buckle up, and put away your cell phones.
