Rep. Spohnholz’s October 2nd Newsletter: Criminal Justice Hearings and Senior Benefits

There has been a lot of discussion about rising crime rates and criminal justice reform as enacted in SB91. There is no arguing that crime rates are rising in Alaska- according to the Alaska Justice Center they have been rising since 2014. My heart goes out to those who have been hurt as a result—it’s terrible to have your home or property violated.

Rep. Spohnholz’s July 28th Newsletter: Pragmatic compromise & better eye care for Alaskans

Yesterday, the legislature convened itself in a 3rd special session to pass the capital budget. The legislature passed a bipartisan compromise that uses about $122 million in state unrestricted general funds to obtain about $1.2 billion in federal funds. For every dollar in state funds, we receive $10 from the federal government for a variety of infrastructure and transportation projects.

Rep. Spohnholz’s June 8th Newsletter: Special Session Frustration on Day 21

It is day 21 of the Special Session focused on our fiscal situation and Alaskans are frustrated. The legislature has not gotten its work done and we continue to have fiscal uncertainty despite extending the regular session to 120 days and the Governor calling us back into a Special Session focused on a fiscal plan. As I sit here in my office in the Capitol, with no committee meetings on my schedule, I am frustrated too.

Rep. Spohnholz’s May 24th Newsletter: Special Session Update

The regular session is over and we have begun a special session dedicated to a fiscal plan for Alaska and legislation addressing opioid addiction . While I wish we had been able to finish this work in the regular session, these issues are important enough to deserve the extra effort to resolve them. There is no more important job of the legislature than to pass a solid fiscal plan.
