Rep. Spohnholz’s Newsletter: Your Budget Feedback

You may have noticed that we recently updated our newsletter form. In the original version of the newsletter there was a technical difficulty with the links to the contact for emailed testimony. Emailed testimony on the budget can be sent to housefinance@akleg.gov, and emailed testimony on HB 123 and HB 25 can be sent to our office directly at rep.ivy.spohnholz@akleg.gov. These issues have been corrected in the updated version, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Rep. Spohnholz’s Newsletter: Let’s Get Together!

This week there has been, and will be, a TON of opportunity for people to come together and discuss smart policy ideas to help our friends and neighbors while we work to create a sustainable budget.Senator Lisa Murkowski and Senator Dan Sullivan addressed the State Legislature this week. I support Senator Murkowski in her commitment to maintain Medicaid expansion, and welcome the opportunity to work with our national delegation to find solutions in any replacement to the Affordable Care Act.

Rep. Spohnholz’s Newsletter: Big Things Are Happening!

Throughout the first month of the session we have been holding budget subcommittees which afforded us the opportunity to do high level program overviews. We have been hearing from various departments about what is working, what they can do better, and how we can restructure programs in a way that provides services people are asking for, while making informed choices about the fiscal realities facing the state. These subcommittees are winding down and will soon be releasing their recommendations. Once that happens, we can move forward with educated decision making regarding the state budget. I am resolute in my devotion to passing a sustainable budget with consistent revenue streams that are fair and equitable for all Alaskans.

Rep. Spohnholz’s Newsletter: Things to Celebrate

February is Black History Month, a time when we celebrate the rich history of African Americans in our nation and in our state. I would like to highlight a strong Alaskan African American who was so far ahead of her time in her accomplishments, former State Senator Bettye Davis. I first met SenatorDavis when I was five years old; she worked with my mother at the Division of Family and Youth Services serving foster children.

Rep. Spohnholz’s Newsletter: And We’re Off!

It’s been a whirlwind week getting into the full swing of things. I’ve been meeting with constituents and various organizations from all across the state hearing from people interested in helping to develop responsible, evidence based policy. The budget continues to be the major focus of our non-partisan working coalition in the House. We are committed to having an open conversation between all parties who come to the table with good ideas and good intentions to create a responsible, sustainable budget. We know that’s a tall order, but we are prepared to tackle the budget head on, with all solutions on the table.

The Alaska House Majority Coalition members are committed to passing a responsible, sustainable budget along with a sustainable fiscal plan for funding it.
