Resources Available to Assist Alaskans in Registering to Vote
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 26, 2017
Anchorage – Today is National Voter Registration Day to highlight the importance of voting to the health of our democracy. Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) will participate in events to help Anchorage area residents with the voter registration process. Rep. Tarr will lead registration events in Mountain View and Airport Heights.
“Voting is a core component of our democracy, but you give up the right to vote if you are not registered, which is a shame because registering to vote is so easy and simple,” said Rep. Tarr. “I am looking forward to joining volunteers across the country today in helping would be voters get registered so they can participate in the democratic process.”
Rep. Tarr will assist Anchorage area residents in registering to vote at the Red Apple Market in Mountain View from noon to 4:30 p.m. and at the Carrs-Safeway at the Northway Mall from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Rep. Tarr will be assisted in today’s voter registration efforts by local Mountain View resident Mai Xiong.
“Voting is one of the most important things a citizen can do,” said Mai Xiong. “Sometimes voting can be hard, especially when English is your second language. That’s why I’m going to be in front of the Red Apple Market so that I can help include Hmong-Americans in the voting process. It’s important to be represented. We will also have help in Spanish as well.”
Hundreds of voter registration events are planned nationwide as part of National Voter Registration Day. Volunteers will be encouraging voter registration through one-on-one discussions, social media, and expanded voter registration opportunities.
Information on registering to vote in Alaska is available on the Alaska Division of Elections website.
