NEWS: Alaska House Passes Bill to Establish March as Sobriety Awareness Month

HB 138 Seeks to Raise Awareness about the Dangers of Alcohol and Drug Abuse

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 8, 2017

Juneau – The Alaska House of Representatives unanimously passed legislation Friday designating March as Sobriety Awareness Month in Alaska.  Once approved and signed into law, the designation will be permanent and open up additional opportunities for both the public and private sector to organize awareness activities.  House Bill 138 is sponsored by Representative Dean Westlake (D-Kiana).

“Alcohol and drug abuse continues to tear at the fabric of Alaska from Kotzebue to Ketchikan and everywhere in between.  Permanently designating March as Sobriety Awareness Month is a small step to raise awareness about how substance abuse makes our communities less safe and endangers the future of far too many Alaskans,” said Rep. Westlake.

HB 138 allows Sobriety Awareness Month to be observed by schools, community groups, and other public and private agencies with awareness activities related to drug and alcohol abuse.  The bill passed the Alaska House of Representatives Friday by a vote of 39-0.  HB 138 will now be sent to the Alaska Senate for consideration.
